As a location pet photographer there is something special about watching a well training working breed, especially labradors, want to perform for their handler. As part of a recent field sports photo shoot, for my portfolio, I was fortunate to spend some time at Kelford Dog Training in North Wales. I was introduced to a number of their beautiful Kelford labradors and had an opportunity to see one of the youngsters complete a number of water retrieves in a nearby lake.
Ever eager to please, she put huge effort into her leaps into the lake, providing perfect arching jumps for me to photograph. As a photographer, it’s always a challenge capturing images of a black dog against dark water, at speed. Modern cameras are great at working with the more typical portrait model, but they work off contrast detection and there isn’t a great deal of contrast when you think of black against black. But my success rate was high and I was able to create some wonderful images from the session. I’m very pleased to hear that Kelford Training have asked to use some of these images to decorate their guests accommodation. Ultimately my aim is to create lasting fine art pet photography displays for your walls, so it is lovely to know that this is how Kelly wishes to use these images too.
